Superstar
Rajinikanth, Ace director
Shankar and Mozart of Asia A.R.Rahman. The
combination shocked the whole cine world when the movie
got launched. Expectations grew with every new scoop,
every new photo and finally reached peak levels when the
audio somehow got leaked into the net. Now the wait is
finally over for AVM's magnum opus - Sivaji's
audio.
Has ARR found his midas touch again?
Has Shankar extracted the best from his favorite music
director?
Has ARR got it right for a mass masala commercial entertainer
for the Superstar's fans?
Read on and you will be surprised with the answers!
Surprise
Surprise !! The album opens with an intro song for
the Superstar. After many speculations and considerations,
this song was composed but it definitely catches you
instantly. S.P.B. is back for the intro song
and he rocks all the way in this rocking opening number
penned by Na. Muthukumar. Balleilakka
is folky, catchy with meaningful lyrics too. No
big advise here for the people but very much in tune
with the movies storyline. Rehannah joins the
fun in the middle but SPB is the show stealer.
His energy is amazing and adding to that is Rahman's
catchy folk tune and it will be a delight to watch it
on screen as we know about Shankar's picturisation
and Superstar's energy. We should rewind ourselves
and remind us about the opening number in Baba and when
we compare them, this one wins hands down. Lyrics and
music are amazing and as SPB finishes the song
with a "COOL" the song is indeed cool.
Next
up is Style. Yes
its indeed titled Style for the Style Mannan
and it just blows you away. ARR has done it once
again. "Experimentation at its maximum best".
Rahman mixes hip hop with some hi fi lyrics by
Pa. Vijay and after the song Girlfriend
in Boys, the duo combine to give another blockbuster.
This song was reportedly shot in Bilbao, Spain. Rags,
Tanvi, Blazee and Suresh Peters just blow
the roof. This song will bring the house down when it
hits the theatres. As always with new experiments, this
song will take time to grow on you but watch out for
the lyrics. The lyrics add to the mystic elements in
the tune and it will for sure rock in screen. Purists
could be saying this song is too hi fi but that's Rahman
and Shankar for you. They raise the bar every
time they come together and this song is an apt example
for that. Watch out for the last 30 seconds.
So
one folk intro song and one hi fi hip hop song, what
next. We have Vaaji Vaaji Sivaji
sung brilliantly by Hariharan and Madhushree.
Vairamuthu's lyrics are sure to go down as one
all time favorite. New words tuned to a beautiful soothing
and catchy melody. Rahman has been accused off
late for some very slow numbers. Here Shankar
makes sure he doesn't get any such accusations. This
song just grows on you as a slow poison and very much
in the likes of Ale Ale from Boys but
the similarity ends there. The vocals and the lyrics
are better and match well. Hariharan just gets
better and better as the song goes on. A nice soothing
duet but it gets eclipsed by the beats of the next shocking
number.
Yes,
up next is Athiradee
sung by A.R.Rahman and a newcomer Sayonara
just eclipses the beats of Vaaji Vaaji. This
song will be rocking the dance floors and movie theatres
for quiet a long time to come. ARR just excels,
he has chosen the best number for himself. At first
hearing the lyrics by Vaali may not even sound
clear thanks to the heavy beats but wait. By the 3rd
hearing, the tune gets to your head and the lyrics are
sleek. "Billa, Ranga, Baasha than
.
Roger Moore, Don" that should please the
Superstar's fans. The beats make you dance for
sure and it's glad to hear a rocking song from ARR
after a long time and the guitar interludes will
go down well with the masses. This song makes a very
valid point, Rahman can deliver mass commercial
chartbusters and his touch is still very much intact.
After
a rocking number, a soothing melody follows. Sahana
sung brilliantly by Vijay Yesudass and Gomathi
Shree takes you thru a myriad of emotions. Vairamuthu
does a brilliant job again and intelligently uses
the Thirupavai. Very soulful rendition from both
the singers. This number will appeal to the purists
and it showcases the depth of Rahman's musical
genius. This version is supposed to be a sad version
and the happy version follows next. Sung by Udit
Narayan and Chinmayee, Sahana will
for sure rule the melody chartbusters in 2007. If Munbe
Vaa was the melody No. 1 last year, then its Sahana
this year!
One
of the most beautiful, catchy and an easy melody from
Rahman. ARR tends to get too carnatic
when composing melodies and thus the song used to be
very hard to grow on you but this time, the tune is
very soothing and easy. The lyrics by Vairamuthu
are given apt importance by Udit Narayan and
Chinmayee. Excellent chorus and instrumentation.
Chinmayee excels and Rahman's interludes
add to the magic of this duet. Another number to appeal
to the purists more than the masses but will for sure
grow more popular with more hearings.
After
some mass numbers and purist numbers, comes the theme
song. The BOSS penned
jointly by Na. Muthukumar and Blazee.
This song is touted to be the song used for fight sequences
in the movie and after some repeated hearings grows
more popular. Visual impact will add to the popularity
level. Excellent rhythm arrangement with funky lyrics
adds to the mass appeal. Watch out for the funky lyrics,
kids will go crazy over this song. Blazee was
used for the theme song in BABA - titled BABA
which never got released officially but this time
he gets his due and has given a stunning contribution.
This theme will for sure heat up the theatres.
Well,
time for the verdict and it's loud and clear. A.R.Rahman
has delivered big time, for his fans, for Shankar's
fans and most importantly for Superstar's fans.
All the talk of his inability to score commercial hits
will be eclipsed by this album. Hats off to Shankar
for pulling it all together. Like all Shankar
movies we have the variety. No repeats from older tunes
(A major bonus). Rahman has used his singers,
lyricists and most importantly himself very intelligently
to come out with an album which should appeal both to
the class and the mass.
APPLAUSE
: CD cover and packaging looks solid and much in
line with a Shankar movie. The songs have raised the
expectations to the sky.
AHEM! : Audio quality in the CD disappoints.
AVM should have done better.
VERDICT : Blockbuster! Let's hope and pray that
the movie delivers big time!!!
